Today, the American warblers (members of the family Parulidae) are very popular, and birders eagerly await their return every spring. But two centuries ago they were far from popular—they caused endless confusion for early naturalists. They were not even recognized as a distinct family at first, with some being classified as thrushes, flycatchers, or creepers. Different names were often applied to males, females, young birds, or spring and fall plumages of the same warbler, and rare hybrids were sometimes claimed as new species. In this program, based on research for his most recent book, Kenn Kaufman will delve into the surprising backstories of some of our favorite songbirds.

Kenn Kaufman is the author of more than a dozen books, including Kingbird Highway, his memoir about traveling the country searching for birds as a teenager in the early 1970s. His other titles include The Birds that Audubon Missed, A Season on the Wind, Flights Against the Sunset, and the Kaufman Field Guide series, covering birds, mammals, insects, butterflies, and other subjects.
