DESCRIPTION:Ethan Whitaker is a retired software developer and entrepreneur who has started and sold multiple companies during his 40-year career. He is a 1980s graduate of Bates College and has authored dozens of Apps for Apple and Google. In 2021\, Ethan broke Maine’s Big Year Birding record\, finding and identifying 324 species of birds in the State in a single calendar year! Ethan and his wife\, Ingrid\, wrote about his Big Year Adventure\, in “Every Bird in Maine”\, available where birding books are sold.  Their most recent book\, “What’s that Bird? — A Kid’s Guide to the Backyard Birds of New England\,” was published in September of 2022.

For 18 years he has been improving wildlife habitat at an old farm near Ithaca\, NY. Ed is involved with several respected conservation groups in- cluding Trout Unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. After college Ed worked and studied photography at Eastman Kodak\, with assignments in Singapore\, Mexico\, England\, and Australia. Ed later spent 35 years in life sciences\, leading companies in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields across 40 countries. During that time\, Ed and his family lived in England for 14 years. They moved to Orr’s Island in Harpswell in 2007. His education includes a B.Sc.in Marketing and Management from Clarkson University and an MBA in Management from the Rochester Institute of Technology. We will search for Fall migrants at several Refuge Divisions. \nMeet at 8:00 a.m. at the Rachel Carson Administrative Headquarters parking area\, 321 Port Road in Wells. Once together\, we will drive to several locations. There will be some walking on level ground. \nDirections: Take I-95 to Exit 19 (Wells). From Exit 19\, turn left onto Route 9/109. Public Program: 7:00 P.M.- 8:00P.M.\nLocation: Curtis Memorial Library\, Morrell Room\, Brunswick. \nJust before the pandemic shut down travel in 2020\, Derek and Jeannette Lovitch travelled to Cuba on a birding trip and will share their photos and stories from the trip. Derek has made a career as a writer and guide out of his lifelong passion for birds. Jeannette is a very accomplished bird photographer. They\, own and operate Freeport Wild Bird Supply\, a retail store that caters to birders of all levels. The store serves as a vehicle for Derek and Jeanette to continue sharing their enthusiasm for birding\, birds\, and bird conservation. \nDerek and Jeannette founded the Bradbury Mountain Raptor Research Project. They are active with many birding and conservation issues in Maine. Hardly a day goes by when Derek isn’t in the field. His first book\, “How To Be a Better Birder”\, was published in March 2012 by the Princeton University Press. His second book\, “Birdwatching in Maine”\, was published in (May 2017) by the University Press of New England. He was also the “Tools of the Trade” Department Editor for “Birding” magazine for 6 years\, and his writing has also appeared in Birder’s World\, Bird Observer\, Bird Watcher’s Digest\, NJ Audubon\, and Winging It.
