SUMMARY:Public Program: Peggy Page\, “Birding in New Zealand”
DESCRIPTION:Few birding locations on the planet offer such spectacular scenery and extraordinary birds as New Zealand. Isolated for millions of years\, it features many species–even whole families–of birds found nowhere else. And its surrounding waters teem with albatross\, petrels and shearwaters\, all easily accessible on coastal pelagic trips. Join local birder Peggy Page as she shares her experiences with keas and kiwis\, tuis and penguins\, and even a visit with hobbits! Brunswick resident Peggy Page has been birding for nearly forty years\, including trips to 25 countries and every US state. She especially loves seabirds and never misses a chance to be out on a choppy sea searching for shearwaters. She is currently a member of the Merrymeeting Audubon board and chair of the Scholarship Committee. \nMorrell Room\, Curtis Memorial Library\, Brunswick \nThe program will be preceded by a chapter board meeting: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

SUMMARY:Public Program: The Hidden History of American Shorebirds
DESCRIPTION:An evening discussion with Kenn Kaufman!\nNote: This event is online-only.\nRegistration is required at https://maineaudubon.ticketspice.com/an-evening-with-kenn-kaufman-february-10 \nThe shorebirds – sandpipers\, plovers\, and their kin – are beautiful\, but telling the many species apart can be a confusing challenge for birders. However\, the level of confusion was much greater in the early 1800s\, when naturalists were struggling to classify all these birds for the first time. Some species were described to science over and over\, under different names\, while some other species were overlooked completely for decades. And for many years\, everyone underestimated the amazing migrations of these long-distance travelers. In this program\, based on a chapter from his most recent book\, Kenn Kaufman will describe the misadventures of early shorebird-watchers\, and how those events are reflected in our experience of birding today. \nKenn Kaufman is the author of more than a dozen books\, including Kingbird Highway\, his memoir about traveling the country searching for birds as a teenager in the early 1970s. His other titles include The Birds that Audubon Missed\, A Season on the Wind\, Flights Against the Sunset\, and the Kaufman Field Guide series\, covering birds\, mammals\, insects\, butterflies\, and other subjects.

SUMMARY:Public Program: Bob Duchesne\, “What’s out there in the Gulf of Maine?”
DESCRIPTION:Bob’s been doing a lot of boat trips into the Gulf of Maine\, and created a new program he refers to as “what’s out there in the Gulf of Maine”. There’s more out there than what can be seen from the beach. Sea creatures from all over the Atlantic\, stream into the Gulf to take advantage of the abnormally cold\, food-rich waters. The Gulf just offshore is like an oceanic Serengeti\, if you know where to look. \n\n\n\n\nLocation: Curtis Memorial Library\, Morrell Room\, Brunswick \n\n\n\nThe program will be preceded by a chapter board meeting: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm \n2025 MMA FEB Duchesne

SUMMARY:CANCELLED due to weather: Avian Haven - A Sanctuary for Maine’s Wild Birds
DESCRIPTION:Avian Haven\, located in Freedom\, ME\, is dedicated to the rehabilitation and care of injured and orphaned wild birds with the goal of returning them to their natural habitats. They strive to provide the highest standards of care and treatment for their avian patients.  Avian Haven Clinic Director Kim Chavez and Rehabilitation Manager Marcy DeCoff will share Avian Haven’s mission\, history\, operations and success stories. \nKim Chavez grew up in a little town in Oregon just south of the capital. She graduated from Unity College with a major in Captive Wildlife Care & Education and a focus in Wildlife Rehabilitation. She got her first taste in the rehab field during an internship at Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center\, previously in Salem\, OR. At Turtle Ridge\, she was primarily responsible for caring for the patients of the baby bird room from intake to release. After two summers with Turtle Ridge\, Kim completed a summer internship position with Avian Haven and after graduating the following year returned to Avian Haven as a rehab staff member. Kim has continued to learn and develop her skills in the Wildlife Medicine field through continuing education and by working with exotic species at River Road Veterinary Hospital in Orrington\, ME. She is now the Clinic Director overseeing all aspects of Avian Haven’s clinic. \nBorn and raised in California\, Marcy DeCoff has been an avid nature lover from the start. After an impressive twenty-four-year career with the United States Air Force\, Marcy and her family made the move to Maine. Partaking in an abundance of hiking\, kayaking\, and environmental photography\, Marcy stumbled upon an eagle sitting in her nest in 2022. After a significant storm unseated an eaglet from that very nest\, Marcy sprang into action and got the eaglet into care at Avian Haven. From that moment on\, it didn’t take long for Marcy to catch the wildlife rehabilitation bug and officially join the flock at Avian Haven where she is now the Rehabilitation Manager. \n \nLocation: Curtis Memorial Library\, Morrell Room\, Brunswick \n\n\n\nThe program will be preceded by a chapter board meeting: 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
