SUMMARY: Keeping Track of Scaled Jewels: Biology and Conservation of Maine’s Butterflies -
DESCRIPTION:Insects comprise over half of all species described on earth. One of Maine’s more colorful and conspicuous insect groups are the Lepidoptera—butterflies and moths. Butterflies serve an important ecological role both as pollinators of many wildflowers and as prey to larger species ranging from dragonflies to migrant warblers. In this talk\, wildlife biologist Phillip deMaynadier will introduce the public to the biology and diversity of Maine’s butterflies\, highlight results from a recent statewide butterfly atlas\, and offer conservation measures that can be taken to protect these beautiful and important animals.\nAuthor-signed copies of the recently published Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces (Cornell University Press) will also be available for purchase at a discounted rate. \nPhillip deMaynadier\, Wildlife Biologist\, Ph.D.\, has worked as a wildlife biologist for Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for 27 years with a focus on nongame and endangered species. He currently supervises the Department’s Wildlife Diversity Section. Phillip received his doctorate in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine in 1996 where he serves on the graduate faculty. Having authored over 50 scientific publications\, Phillip focuses much of his attention now on helping narrow the gap between conservation science and policy.

SUMMARY: Spectacular Bobolinks: Implementing Conservation Measures for Our Imperiled Grassland Birds -
DESCRIPTION:Bobolinks and meadowlarks are two of the most charismatic and iconic species of our grasslands. They\, along with other grassland species\, have suffered the steepest losses of North American birds in recent decades\, facing threats on several fronts simultaneously. Join us as we learn about the birds of our grasslands\, the challenges they face\, and how we as landowners can help conserve these wonderful species. \nLaura Suomi-Lecker is director of the Ag Allies statewide grassland bird program and technical director at Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation District and Manager.

SUMMARY: Program: Behavior, Society, and Sex in Adolescent Birds, Dr. Liam Taylor -
DESCRIPTION:Most birds have some growing up to do before they start to breed. Although they reach full adult size within weeks of hatching\, many birds will not raise offspring for years\, or even decades. Dr. Liam Taylor explores the strange things that young birds need to do before they can reproduce—from developing a territory on a rocky island to finding a dance partner on the rainforest floor. Looking back through millions of years of evolution\, we will uncover how society and sex create new challenges and opportunities for adolescent birds. \nDr. Liam Taylor is an evolutionary ecologist and ornithologist\, studying how social structures influence the ecology\, evolution and conservation of birds. They are currently working as the Doherty Postdoctoral Scholar in Biology at Bowdoin College\, Maine\, and the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island\, New Brunswick\, Canada. Their field studies have ranged from shorebirds in the subarctic to tropical\, dancing manakins in the Amazon rainforest. \nMEET AT The Highlands Room\, Topsham Public Library\, Topsham. \nChapter board meeting: 5:15 p.m.–6:15 p.m. \n*Note the new location and time.
